Vriesea splendens is a spectacular tropical houseplant, prized for its zebra-striped foliage and colorful, flat-spike-shaped inflorescence. Its striking and exotic appearance makes it a star plant for adding a bold and decorative touch to bright interiors.
Origin: Native to the humid tropical forests of South America, primarily Venezuela and Guyana, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees.
Growth: Slow to moderate growth. It forms a rosette of stiff, arching, glossy green leaves marked with darker transverse bands. The plant typically reaches 40 to 60 cm in height indoors. After flowering, the main rosette stops growing and produces offsets at its base.
Flowers: Spectacular and long-lasting blooms. It develops a large, flattened, bright red to orange bract from which small yellow flowers emerge. The decorative bract can remain attractive for several months.
Light: Prefers bright but indirect light. Good light intensifies the colors of the foliage and bracts. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.
Watering: Water moderately, keeping the substrate slightly moist. Water can also be kept in the center of the rosette, and should be replenished regularly to prevent stagnation. Reduce watering slightly when growth slows.
Substrate: Use a well-draining potting mix for tropical plants. A mix enriched with perlite or coconut fiber promotes good root aeration and limits stagnant moisture.
Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and animals.
